Once an exclusive hideaway for the rich and famous, this lush beach and crystal clear river was the setting for the movie "Lord of the Flies." Bring a raft or an inner tube and float the river. Order grilled lobster or chicken and have the waiter deliver it right to your lounge chair on the beach. Some say Frenchman's Cove is the most beautiful beach in Jamaica.
Back in the 1960s you might have seen Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor cavorting on the beach in this cove, 8 km (5 miles) east of the center of Port Antonio.
During those heady days, celebrities flocked to the chic Frenchman's Cove resort, still occupying its scenic spot on a windswept headland; for years the hurricane-battered hotel has remained closed awaiting "the money boys" to come in with millions for redevelopment.
Until that glory day arrives, you can enjoy one of the area's best white-sand beaches. It costs $3 to enter daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. There are showers on the beach to wash away the sand.
